Let’s Put Joe Sullivan to Work for Clemson!
My name is Joe Sullivan. I am running in the Republican Primary election and I would like your vote on Tuesday, June 9th!
Too Much Uncontrolled Growth
A candidate for anything Clemson has to recognize the 800 pound elephant in the room – the university, its growth, and plans for more growth. All of us appreciates the new found national recognition, but there has been many negative consequences of the massive student growth (17,465 enrollment in 2000; 29,077 in 2025, 36,000 expected by 2035). Roads are already strained and additional development without a clear plan to deal with the extra vehicles, EMS/ Fire access, sewer capacity and public safety is poor leadership and will continue to harm our quality of life.
I am a Citizen First and Not a Career Politician
I have never run for elected office. I’m a citizen first and a politician much further down the list. I see how experience in government is important and county council currently has a number of councilmen with over 10 years in one office or another. However, a fresh perspective and electing a John Q Public citizen like myself adds value too, and that is what I’ll bring to the table.
Clemson is an Education Hub
The Clemson area is an education hub from K4 through college graduation. It starts at Clemson Elementary which is down my block, then RC Edwards, Daniel High School being in the top 5 in the state, the Pickens County Career Center too, and finally Tri-County Tech and Clemson University. We must support and protect those academic institutions.
Roads
Build first and deal with the consequences later was not a good plan. There is lot of catching up to do. ACATs and the SCDOT redesign and widen roads in our area, and their next project is the intersection at Issaqueena Trail and Cambridge Drive. Major problems exist on US 123, US 76 and SC 93 in Clemson. If elected, I’ll join the ACATs board and fight hard to include those roads in the Long-Range Plan for our area.
Protect Our Lakes
Currently there are few regulations on our lakes other than those imposed by the Army Corps of Engineers on Lake Hartwell. I support adding a layer of restrictions on Lake Keowee and Jocassee to protect their natural beauty, animals, the water we drink and the outdoor recreation our residents of Clemson and Pickens County enjoy.
Communication
I grew up one of 10 children. In a large family, someone is always talking or asking, so as I grew up I picked up the gift of gab. And with 8 sisters, I learned how to listen and actually hear as well. I had to wait my turn at times, so I also learned different people have different wants and needs, and move at different speeds. I know having patience and understanding as a public servant is critical
